By giving up His own Son for our sins, God manifests that his plan for us is one of benevolent love, prior to any merit on our part: “In this is love, not that we loved God but that He loved us and sent His Sin to be the expiation for our sins.” God “shows His love for us in that when we were yet sinners Christ died for us.”
- Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraph 604

It’s Not A Contest

Going into Lent, we should take on the challenge to do our fasting in silence. Our Lenten journey can easily become, “What are you giving up for Lent?…Mhmm, We'll, I’m giving up _______ and I’m dying.” It’s not a contest of who had the better sacrifice. We may fall into, “Uuuuugh! Is it Sunday yet?! I want my _______.” It’s not a contest of who is suffering more. We should take the words Christ spoke seriously:

“And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”
- Matthew 6:16-18

So often we are ridiculed by the secular world for our “love” of suffering. That we’re sadists. But those people don’t see the deeper layer. They don’t realize that there’s a point to all this! And it is most definitely not to win a contest. After all, do you challenge those around you that you love your mom more than they do? That you’re better at making friends than they are? No! And that’s what Lent is. I time to shed your skin of the world and strive to grow closer to Christ. Is this time painful? Yes, but pain is not the end goal!
